Breast Implant Revision

There are a number of reasons why a patient may require a breast implant revision. The most common is actually not due to a complication such as rupture or capsular contracture. The main reason that women come in to discuss breast augmentation revision surgery is because they are unhappy with the size and position of their breast implants. For some women, they notice this dissatisfaction immediately after surgery. Their original implant feels too big or too small. For others, however, this dissatisfaction may develop over time, especially if their body has changed since the time of their original implant surgery.

REASONS FOR BREAST IMPLANT REVISION SURGERY

Breast implant revision requires a thorough consultation prior to surgery to discuss reasons for revisions and desired outcomes. Common reasons for revision are:

  • Dissatisfaction with size or shape of original implants
  • Rupture or deflation of the implant
  • Implant malposition
  • Changing aesthetic with age
  • Capsular contracture
  • Asymmetry
  • Old implant that needs to be updated or switched from saline to silicone
  • Problem with the implant (pain, sagging, rippling)

BREAST IMPLANT REVISION VS REPLACEMENT VS REMOVAL

There is no rule that says implants need to be exchanged after 10 years, though nothing lasts forever and tastes do change. Replacing a breast implant for another size or type may be a simple exchange through your original breast augmentation incision assuming that your skin and tissues are healthy. Pregnancy, breastfeed, weight gain/loss, menopause, and general aging can affect the appearance and position of old implants and may require additional considerations, such as a breast lift, for proper revision.

Patients who are experiencing problems with the appearance of their breast implants from capsular contractions may require excision of the capsule to achieve the best possible cosmetic result. All of these options will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation
